European resources are becoming increasingly important in helping regions to face contemporary challenges and to generate a smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.

However, the variety of EU funding sources and the complexity of their functioning may result in a lack of knowledge of the available opportunities and a low uptake of such resources. This is particularly true for the wide range of funding directly managed by the European Commission.

Considering the strategic value of these resources and identifying public entities as actors of crucial relevance for territorial development, the Association of Municipalities of South Tyrol and the EU Liason Office of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen - South Tyrol have decided to launch the project "EuroP.E. - Public Entities in Europe ".

The initiative intends to increase the knowledge of European direct funds and how they operate, in order to stimulate their greater understanding and use.

In a first phase, we want to analyze the state of art in the use of EU direct funds in the public sector in South Tyrol, trying to highlight critical aspects but also strengths of our system. To this end, a short questionnaire has been developed and sent to municipalities, province departments and other public entities.

Using the data collected, we will also elaborate a guide addressed to public entities, in which we will report the results of the inquiry and provide useful information about EU direct funds, trying to offer solutions to the emerged problems.
In addition, the guide will also provide ideas and examples about the ways in which other regions in Europe promote and facilitate the use of European direct funding in the public sector.
