Following the success of the program in recent years, the “Alpeuregio Summer School” took place in the premises of the joint representation of the European Region Tyrol – South Tyrol – Trentino from June 30th - July 10th for the fourth time. University graduates from Tyrol, South Tyrol, Trentino received advanced training on EU politics, hearing lectures by EU officials and engaging in lively debates.

First week:

After an introduction to the tasks and workings of the Permanent Representation of Austria to the EU by EU Ambassador Walter Grahammer as the first item on the agenda, the program continued with lectures and discussions on main EU policy areas, institutions and initiatives such as Regional Policy, the Economic and Social Committee, the Europe 2020 strategy as well as environmental, technological and development policies. Furthermore, the students were provided with information on career opportunities at the European Union and implemented recruitment processes. One of the first week’s highlight was the visit to the European Parliament, where the students were given further lectures on EU politics and visited the Parliament’s plenary assembly room. At the so-called “Alpeuregio Café”, the participants had the opportunity to talk to young professionals working for the European Union and listen to personal experiences and accounts of their careers in a relaxed atmosphere. Also Eva Lichtenberger, former Member of Parliament, was a lecturer at this year’s Summer School. She talked about the work in the European Parliament.

Second Week:

The second week continued with experts giving insight into cultural, foreign, transport, agricultural, energy, health and consumer policy. Macro-regional strategies, one of them the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region (EUSALP) which is of particular interest to the European Region, were made a major topic of this year’s Summer School. Highlights of the second week were the visit to the European Counciland the lecture by Herbert Dorfmann, MEP for the European region. The Summer School’s program also included an insight into EU lobbying as well as a discussion of the recent parliamentary elections.

The participants‘ feedback was very positive: Not only did these ten days give them the opportunity to experience European politics from up close. Apart from the deep insight into forms of organisation and decision-making processes of the European Union, also the exchange with like-minded students from neighbouring regions was perceived as an enriching and highly positive experience.
